Starting Your Own Family Traditions

By Granny Annie

Hello to all my new sweeties! Sweeties, that’s what I call my own grandchildren and there is always room to add special grandchildren. Did you know that we can always love someone else that is not even in our family? Yes, we can! So, you all are my special Sweeties. I am so happy to write to you all through the Man of the House (MOTH) website. Isn’t this just the greatest?

Since MOTH is starting around some of my favorite holidays (Christmas and New Year’s), I got to thinking about what you all must be doing at home. For me and my Sweeties, getting together to share stories, food, and good times has become our family tradition for these holidays. What about your family traditions? Don’t have any? We can fix that right up!

I used to think that “doing something” together had to cost something. Sometimes that is true. But often we can find things that don’t cost anything or cost very little. We can start our own family tradition any time we want to.

I know for those couple of years that there wasn’t much money we decided that we would have a special dinner where all of us sat at the same table. You know we don’t sit around the table together much these days. We each took turns saying what was special about everyone else around the table. Let me tell you, after you have a few family and friends say why you are special, I was feeling pretty good about myself. I could tell from the smiles around the table that everyone else did too. That didn’t cost anyone anything and we all felt like we had the very best gift!

To make the dinner more festive we made our own decorations. With some wax paper, glue, and old Christmas cards, we would cut out pictures on the cards. Next we would glue them to a piece of wax paper that was the size of a place mat. We would use another piece of wax paper (the same size as the first piece of wax paper) and place a little glue to stick that piece of wax paper over the other wax paper with the Christmas card cut outs. We made our Christmas place mats! You can do that for most any holiday. You can even color a picture or use your own art work in between the two sheets of wax paper for your holiday place mat.

It doesn’t matter that things change from year to year. You can make your own tradition for that year. If you would like Grannie Annie to help you with your family tradition, just let me know. I would just love doing that!

Until next time, stay sweet!
